National football and education programme launched in Wymondham

Aspiring footballers and those wishing to use their passion of football to kick off their future careers have been given a boost with the arrival of a national football and education programme in Wymondham.

The Football Industry College kicked off at South Norfolk Council’s fantastic 3G facility at Kett’s Park in September 2019, providing boys and girls aged 16 to 18, the opportunity to combine education with a football development, training and match programme.

Utilising the exciting world of the Football Industry with an innovative education and sports development programme, students have the opportunity to study for a BTEC Level 1/2 Sport or Level 3 in Sport & Exercise Science, along with the chance to improve their GCSE maths and English grades if required.

South Norfolk Council Cabinet member, Yvonne Bendle said: “Being host to the Football Industry College is fantastic news for the district. The Council continues to invest in the health and wellbeing of our residents and it is wonderful to see our new facility being used to offer young people such a great opportunity.”

Director of Education, Darren Cox told us: “The college combines modern academic study, practical hands-on learning and the experience of the real football industry. Our aim is to provide our students with the skills experience and qualifications to prepare them for progression routes onto university, apprenticeships, overseas scholarships and employment within the sport industry that includes pro & semi-pro football, coaching, strength & conditioning, performance & analysis, sports therapist, refereeing and more.”

On the pitch students can develop as a player, learning from the colleges UEFA A qualified coaches and ex professional footballers while participating in both competitive college leagues and elite fixtures. And should a coach feel a student has the potential, they use their extensive contacts to arrange trials games or arrange opportunities to train at professional clubs. The coaches also act as mentors to the students and support those who show the desire to undertake their FA Coaching Level 1 qualification.
The colleges enrichment programme develops students creativity, initiative and leadership skills through a range of community coaching delivery opportunities and depending on behaviour, attendance and performance the college provides, trips to universities (including UCFB Wembley), Football Matches & Stadium Tours, end of season football tours, team building activities and talks from guest speakers.

The Football Industry College are running an ‘Experience Session’ at Kett’s Park on Tuesday 22nd October 2019, kicking off at 11am with full time at 1pm. The event will feature a train-like-a-pro session followed by an education Q&A and is open to any current year 11 students and their parents to attend.
