Local pie-maker Bakeshack crowned best Hot-Eating Savoury Pie

Norfolk based pie-expert, Bakeshack has won big at this year’s British Pie Awards, taking home the prize for best Hot-Eating Savoury Pie. The pie-maker beat out 54 mouth-watering entries in this category with its unique Spiced Miso Beef Short-ribs and Sour Cherries to take home the prize.

The pie-oneering awards, now in its 14th run, celebrate the nation’s tastiest and most creative pies – from the quintessentially British, to the totally exotic – and champion both companies and individuals across Britain for their pastry covered genius.

Bakeshack is renowned for its delicious baked goods with an oriental twist and it is this twist that impressed judges this time around.

Matthew O’Callaghan, Chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association and host of the British Pie Awards, said: “There has been a real buzz around the Awards this year. We’ve eaten some spectacular pies, and Bakeshack has beaten some very tough competition for best Hot-Eating Savoury Pie. These awards celebrate the skill of British pie-connoisseurs across the nation, and I’d like to say a huge thank you to each and every person and pie lover involved!”

The Annual Pie Ceremony received the highest ever amount of entries this year. With 968 in total, the Steak Pie class was positioned at the top of the entries leader board for 2022, contrasting to 2021, where the Vegan Pie class was the most entered.

Alongside this record number of nearly 1,000 pies, a record 151 pie-connoisseurs were recruited to judge the delicacies on Wednesday 9th March, including expertise from retailers like Harrods and Tesco, to baking professionals.

The contest included 23 mouth-watering categories, which ranged from classic entries including Beef & Ale or Steak & Kidney, to the more exotic, including the whacky Kangaroo, Ale & Tasmanian Pepperberry Pie, and Spiced Miso Beef Short-Ribs and Sour Cherries Pie. Other pies included Crab Potato and Chives Pasty, Christmas Dinner Pie (complete with turkey, stuffing and all the trimmings), Creamy Cashew, Pea and Mushroom Pie and finally for the dessert lovers out there, a pie called Rhubarb and Custard ‘Barbara’.
